A resurfacing project is currently underway between Rockwood and the Pinkerton Low Bridge (Milepost 43.5 to Milepost 51.5). The trail will remain open during this project although users may experience minor delays of less than five minutes during the work. While the new crushed limestone surface will be compacted after application, moisture in the material causes the trail to remain soft until conditions allow for the surface to dry and harden. The work should take approximately two weeks to complete, weather permitting.

THE BIG SAVAGE TUNNEL IS OPEN FOR THE 2014 TRAIL SEASON.

The 3,300 ft. long Big Savage Tunnel, near the Mason-Dixon Line is lighted and is opened during trail season. The tunnel is usually closed for the winter December 6 - April 3. Please check this site for updates. For a road detour around BST please Visit the Website

The Big Savage Tunnel Recognition Plaque is complete and has been installed at the Deal Trailhead. Thank you to all who contributed to this challenging project, and special thanks to our fantastic installation team!

Pinkerton Tunnel - Help us open the Pinkerton Tunnel!

Great Allegheny Passage currently takes a 1.5 mile detour around a deteriorated railroad tunnel, near mile 52 in Somerset County. Besides shortening the distance, fixing the tunnel will create another spectacular feature along the trail. Located between the Pinkerton Low and High Bridges, the "bridge-tunnel-bridge" in quick succession will be a marvel. It will also make a great way to create a loop ride, using the tunnel and the detour trail.

Gifts of over $500 will be acknowledged on a plaque at the tunnel.

The opportunity is here. Let's open up the old WM Pinkerton Tunnel!

For complete details on all construction notices for the Montour Trail please Visit the Website

As of March 4, 2014 there are no construction activities on the Montour Trail

In late summer of 2014 construction may commence on the Valleybrook#2 bridge near MP 30.3. This construction will require an on road detour for much of the construction period. The exact detour is not finalized but will be signed when it occurs.

The Breslube – Penn superfund site at MP 0.3 is scheduled for remediation from approximately April through October 2014. During most of the period the trail may be open on weekends at this point but for some period of time the trail will be entirely closed from Hassam road to MP 0. A detour will be posted on the Montour Trail website but the detour is long and steep and we advise not attempting to ride this section of trail detour during the remediation period.

Construction is anticipated to begin in June 2014 on the 509 foot long Library Trestle but this work will have no impact on the current detour around that area.

Normal maintenance including ditch cleaning and resurfacing will occur throughout the summer and may result in minimal delays. Resurfacing is anticipated around MP 7.5 to MP9+ and from MP 17.3 to MP 20.
